Research Program Manager

Overview

SaferAI is hiring its first Research Program Manager to help our research teams do their best work. This is not a technical research-lead role; subject-matter leads will continue to own intellectual direction and technical mentorship. Your role will be to build the people, planning, feedback, and execution systems that help researchers sustain high-quality work across risk modeling, standards, frontier AI risk management, and policy.

About SaferAI

SaferAI works to reduce large-scale AI risks by building the governance and technical infrastructure for effective AI risk management. We work across four integrated areas: frontier AI risk management, risk modeling, technical standards, and policy. Our ability to operate across all four areas simultaneously is what makes our impact greater than the sum of its parts.

We are headquartered in Paris, with a presence in London, and further team members are working remotely. Our team includes computer scientists, physicists, engineers, policy experts, and risk management professionals — people who have chosen to work on a hard, urgent problem and who hold each other to high standards.

Our Management Philosophy

We believe that excellent research requires both brilliant epistemic direction and structured operational support. For optimal impact, our subject-matter leads should be able to focus on intellectual direction, methodology, and technical mentorship. As we scale, we now seek to build out the operational and human support that lets them do exactly that. In this role, your primary objective will be supporting our leadership team (Executive Director and COO) to guide and support our research teams.

In this role, you will partner closely with subject-matter leads to create the conditions for strong research execution: clear operating cadences, useful feedback infrastructure, project visibility, and effective researcher support systems. You will also serve as a trusted point of contact for researchers on workload, growth, and team-health issues, with clear norms around confidentiality, escalation, and decision rights.

Responsibilities

You may thrive in this role if you combine strong judgment, low ego, and a genuine interest in helping research teams do excellent work. Strong candidates might come from AI safety research, research operations, consulting, startup operations, technical program management, or mission-driven research organizations. We are especially interested in candidates with a clear anchor in project/program execution, people leadership, or research-domain fluency, together with the curiosity and adaptability to grow across the rest of the role.

People Management & Team Health (40%): help attract, develop, and retain talent and support them to achieve maximum impact sustainably.

  • Performance & Feedback: Design and introduce an org-wide performance and feedback process. The feedback and reviews themselves will be carried out by researchers and their leads; you own the process that enables them — its formats, cadence, and quality.
  • 1-on-1 support and mentorship: Conduct regular check-ins with all researchers to monitor workload and bandwidth and foster a sustainable, healthy work environment.
  • Recruiting & Interviewing: Contribute to our hiring efforts by helping interview and evaluate candidates to help build a high-performing, mission-aligned team.

Career Development: Work with researchers to define their career trajectories, identify skill gaps, and facilitate access to training, conferences, or external mentorship.

Project & Program Management (40%): Act as a force multiplier and help the organization’s talent deliver on our theory of change for maximal impact.

  • Execution & Unblocking: Act as an operational partner to researchers, clearing administrative or process hurdles so they can execute effectively.
  • Timelines & Deliverables: Collaborate with Subject-Matter Leads to translate research agendas into quarterly plans with well-scoped inputs and clear outputs, outcomes, owners, and milestones. Oversee the lifecycle of deliverables, from scoping to final dissemination.

Special Projects (20%): Support cross-cutting initiatives as the organization grows

  • Leadership Support: Partner with the Executive Director and COO to design and implement strategic initiatives.
  • Capacity Building: Lead internal development projects that fortify our operational foundations during periods of organizational growth.

‍What we’re looking for

  • Management Experience: 3+ years in people and project management, ideally within a research organization, think tank, consultancy, or fast-paced startup.
  • AI Safety Literacy: A strong foundational understanding of the AI safety landscape is necessary to communicate effectively with our team, understand their work context, and help shape quarterly plans. Having done some research projects yourself is beneficial; we seek someone with enough specialist know-how to relate to the operational realities of our researchers’ work.
  • High Emotional Intelligence & Discretion: You handle sensitive information with care and give advice that is honest rather than comfortable — knowing when to escalate and when to resolve quietly. Drawing on first-hand experience with high-performing teams, you use social and systemic awareness to shape the conditions for strong performance and to build psychological safety.
  • Operational Rigor: You are highly organized and comfortable designing simple, durable systems to track multiple long-term, ambiguous projects at once.
  • Service-Oriented Leadership: You take pride in being a force multiplier and enabling others to do excellent work. Your success is measured by the output, health, and retention of the researchers you support.
  • Comfort with Ambiguity: You make sound decisions with incomplete information and build progressively rather than waiting for perfect clarity. You see undefined territory as an opportunity to shape, not a problem to escalate.

‍Working Conditions

Location: SaferAI’s major locations are Paris and London, and we have a preference for this position to be based in either of the two cities. We are willing to consider remote arrangements for an exceptionally strong candidate.

Compensation: Competitive salary, commensurate with experience and location.

Benefits:

  • Health insurance coverage and retirement plans adapted to the location
  • Transportation home to work covered at 50%
  • Productivity expenditures up to €2k annually
  • Office space if relevant
